Rich colours, rare scene, but too small image with tiny bird. The bird itself with the lizard fits into the image 672 x 492 px (0,315 Mp only). Info Male Lion (Panthera leo) prowling in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Prowling primarly consists of walking slowly low-to-the-ground with head down while fixing the target and trying to be as stealthy as possible. This action is a behavior commonly expressed by large carnivores to assess their surroundings, stalk preys, or approach with reduced detectability. In this instance, the lion was pursuing a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) mother and her three cubs, that where close to a recent kill. Lions frequently engage in kleptoparasitism by usurping kills from smaller predators and may also attack cheetahs or their offspring to reduce interspecific competition for prey resources.

This species attains a maximum total length of 33 centimetres (13 in) and its diet is dominated by sponges, tunicates, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In my view, we have to accept that the building itself und the surrounding have very few truly straight horizontal and vertical lines. I’ve tried a lot, but a completely satisfactory result won’t be possible due to my perspective and the building’s construction. If there is one, I’d be happy to see your suggestions. - Not your fault or the building's fault, I believe. The vertical and horizontal lines are correct to within about 0.2 degrees. I asked ChatGPT and he suggested it might be the result of an assymetrical background and lighting. Comment This is indeed a fascinating image, but I believe a Commons featured picture should be minimally documented, which is not the case. The only thing we have is the image name, which Google translates "The books are passed down from generation to generation." Comment Can only agree – the photo is fascinating, but at the same time there may be legal problems, at least regarding the sculpture. According to Commons:Freedom of panorama, the United Arab Emirates don’t have freedom of panorama (and Saudi Arabia doesn’t have it, too). Of course it is possible that the photographer got a permission to take and even to publish the photo including the sculpture. It feeds on sea urchins, molluscs, crustaceans, tube worms and coral. It's one of a number of species of fish which can hunt and eat the crown-of-thorns starfish. They have been observed being aggressive to other fish who enter their territory and females can be aggressive to divers and snorkelers around their nests during the reproduction season, which occurs for about a week in each month (either after the full moon or new moon, depending on the population). Maybe it's just my housewife instincts speaking 😄. Whenever I see an interior, I automatically imagine how it would look if everything were neat and tidy! So, for me, the sleeping person catches my eye more than the beautiful room itself.

No, and there shouldn’t be a limit, but in my personal judgement an FP should be one of the best in its specific scope, and I don’t think this is as good as some of the others for composition or light. The angle is not appealing to me and the picture seems a little dark. You are partly right! Yes, the vibrant colored areas represent the escape time (the number of iterations before the sequence diverges to infinity).

However, parts of the Mandelbrot set itself are actually present in this image. Inside those small 'infinity' structures, there are tiny, dark island copies of the main Mandelbrot set (micro-cardioids).

As mentioned in the description, this is a deep zoom at X ≈ -2.0 (specifically -1.999995...). This location is at the very tip of the main antenna (the extreme western needle) of the Mandelbrot set. Since the zoom is incredibly deep (1.15 × 10⁻¹¹⁹), making a visual map/scheme is practically impossible, as any standard resolution overview map would look like a single atom or completely disappear at this scale. They constructed an explicit conformal isomorphism between the complement of the Mandelbrot set and the complement of the closed unit disk. Mandelbrot had originally conjectured that the Mandelbrot set is disconnected. This conjecture was based on computer pictures generated by programs that are unable to detect the thin filaments connecting different parts of $M$ . Upon further experiments, he revised his conjecture, deciding that $M$ should be connected. You are absolutely right mathematically: the Mandelbrot set is connected, and these parts must be linked. However, there is a huge difference between mathematical truth and pixel resolution. At this extreme zoom (Width = 4.6 × 10⁻¹⁶²). When we look at the wider view (10⁻¹¹⁹), the grid of pixels is way too coarse. The connecting threads are billions of times smaller than a single pixel at that scale, so they completely "drop through the cracks" of the grid. They exist, but they are physically invisible to the rendering algorithm at that magnification level. It's like trying to see a 1-millimeter wire on a map of the entire solar system. Comment I'm surprised people don't like the composition, that was the reason why I nominated the image: I like the curve of the girls' faces and their gazes looking up at the mouse, which to me is the focal point of the image. I understand being upset at the animal cruelty on display, but I think it is a good illustration of the subject (animal testing), and I think that how upsetting a subject is should not decide whether it is FP or not. Support I think there is an important distinction between illustrating cruelty and supporting cruelty. This is a well composed image that illustrates a common practice which is perceived by many to be cruel. Would featuring it mean that we support the cruelty? I don't think so. An aside: we have several images of animals as food. One, iirc, of several dead pig carcasses in a market. Those images were featured. In this instance, the lion was pursuing a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) mother and her three cubs, that where close to a recent kill. Lions frequently engage in kleptoparasitism by usurping kills from smaller predators and may also attack cheetahs or their offspring to reduce interspecific competition for prey resources.

- Not your fault or the building's fault, I believe. The vertical and horizontal lines are correct to within about 0.2 degrees. I asked ChatGPT and he suggested it might be the result of an assymetrical background and lighting. Comment Can only agree – the photo is fascinating, but at the same time there may be legal problems, at least regarding the sculpture. According to Commons:Freedom of panorama, the United Arab Emirates don’t have freedom of panorama (and Saudi Arabia doesn’t have it, too). Of course it is possible that the photographer got a permission to take and even to publish the photo including the sculpture. Info Titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) waiting in a cleaning station, see the bluestreak cleaner wrasses (Labroides dimidiatus) cleaning the gills in Nosy Sakatia, Madagascar. The titan triggerfish lives in lagoons and at reefs to depths of 50 centimetres (20 in) in most of the Indo-Pacific. With a length of up to 75 centimetres (30 in) it's the largest species of triggerfish in its range. The titan triggerfish is diurnal and solitary. It feeds on sea urchins, molluscs, crustaceans, tube worms and coral. It's one of a number of species of fish which can hunt and eat the crown-of-thorns starfish. They have been observed being aggressive to other fish who enter their territory and females can be aggressive to divers and snorkelers around their nests during the reproduction season, which occurs for about a week in each month (either after the full moon or new moon, depending on the population). Thanks for your comment, i understand the concern, but their presence is part of the composition—it is not an accidental. Beyond providing a sense of human scale, it transforms the room, turning it from a generic interior into an inhabited space with a narrative. Without it, the photograph would look more like an Airbnb or real estate listing. Maybe it's just my housewife instincts speaking 😄. Whenever I see an interior, I automatically imagine how it would look if everything were neat and tidy! So, for me, the sleeping person catches my eye more than the beautiful room itself.

An image can tell a different story to each person, which is why I rarely explain or comment on my photos. I think it is lovely to see things from a homemaker’s perspective, and it is also nice to know that there is a real person behind the words. As someone who lived alone for a long time, keeping everything neat and organized was relatively easy. Comment Although this image could be evaluated mainly for its aesthetics, I would need some aditional information to understand what we are really looking at. Two main questions: first, is this only ice and snow, or is there some water too (whose presence may be inferred by the presence of the darker areas)? Second, we have no way of scaling this image. I see this image more as an artwork rather than an educational one, and its unclear scaling somewhat contributes to its artistic dimension but I understand that this isn't interesting for everyone. Looking at the other two photos taken by the photographer from this same location (no. 1 and no. 3), I can say that the dark spots are water, and the image was taken from a close distance at the point where the ice meets the lake (referring to macro and close-up in categories). No, and there shouldn’t be a limit, but in my personal judgement an FP should be one of the best in its specific scope, and I don’t think this is as good as some of the others for composition or light. The angle is not appealing to me and the picture seems a little dark. I get the feeling I’m going to be outvoted here, so if I end up being the only voter blocking a five day promotion, I will remove my vote as a courtesy to Tisha’s great photos which I want to make clear I do enjoy. You are partly right! Yes, the vibrant colored areas represent the escape time (the number of iterations before the sequence diverges to infinity).

However, parts of the Mandelbrot set itself are actually present in this image. Inside those small 'infinity' structures, there are tiny, dark island copies of the main Mandelbrot set (micro-cardioids).

As mentioned in the description, this is a deep zoom at X ≈ -2.0 (specifically -1.999995...). This location is at the very tip of the main antenna (the extreme western needle) of the Mandelbrot set. Since the zoom is incredibly deep (1.15 × 10⁻¹¹⁹), making a visual map/scheme is practically impossible, as any standard resolution overview map would look like a single atom or completely disappear at this scale. They constructed an explicit conformal isomorphism between the complement of the Mandelbrot set and the complement of the closed unit disk. Mandelbrot had originally conjectured that the Mandelbrot set is disconnected. This conjecture was based on computer pictures generated by programs that are unable to detect the thin filaments connecting different parts of $M$ . Upon further experiments, he revised his conjecture, deciding that $M$ should be connected. You are absolutely right mathematically: the Mandelbrot set is connected, and these parts must be linked. However, there is a huge difference between mathematical truth and pixel resolution. At this extreme zoom (Width = 4.6 × 10⁻¹⁶²). When we look at the wider view (10⁻¹¹⁹), the grid of pixels is way too coarse. The connecting threads are billions of times smaller than a single pixel at that scale, so they completely "drop through the cracks" of the grid. They exist, but they are physically invisible to the rendering algorithm at that magnification level. It's like trying to see a 1-millimeter wire on a map of the entire solar system. Comment I'm surprised people don't like the composition, that was the reason why I nominated the image: I like the curve of the girls' faces and their gazes looking up at the mouse, which to me is the focal point of the image. I understand being upset at the animal cruelty on display, but I think it is a good illustration of the subject (animal testing), and I think that how upsetting a subject is should not decide whether it is FP or not. Strong support I find the curve of the arm and faces to be very interesting compositionally, and I believe the bright colors and expressions conflicting with the condemnable subject matter give this picture notable complexity. In my opinion this photograph has plenty of utility even judging solely by virtue of the reaction it warranted here. I interpret it as an illustration of how, when given justification, people allow themselves to be happy with the reprehensible. Support I think there is an important distinction between illustrating cruelty and supporting cruelty. This is a well composed image that illustrates a common practice which is perceived by many to be cruel. Would featuring it mean that we support the cruelty? I don't think so. An aside: we have several images of animals as food. One, iirc, of several dead pig carcasses in a market. Those images were featured.
